When the Angels Come Around (Urban Sounds 007) is the third album by Sugahspank! & The Swing Shoes. The album’s ten tracks were recorded at Downstroke Studio and produced by Thanos Amorginos, just like the band’s previous effort, Cash (2019). Most of the material was written during the pandemic, although a few songs had been performed live earlier. As recordings began, the band decided to lean towards a more polished sound. Both their previous albums (A Holy Show, 2014 and Cash, 2019) were more or less recorded live in the studio, after the songs had been road tested. This time however, with live performances all but eliminated due to the pandemic, song arrangements did not have to adhere to the five-piece format and came to include keyboards, horns, percussion, etc. When the Angels Come Around also features the band’s collaboration with vocalist Phil Diamond on the track Blood in the City. The end result is a dynamic, richer sounding album, blending rhythm & blues, soul, gospel and rock into a seamless whole.
